We were very excited about all the teams, sponsors, vendors and staff that indicated they would participate in the re-scheduled weekend of the tournament as well as those who sent us encouraging messages. We thank all of you for your support of the Mizuno JVA Steel City Freeze. We have already begun planning to make sure 2022 is an incredible event experience for all! The Mizuno JVA Steel City Freeze is a two day event hosted by GK Sports and insured by the Junior Volleyball Association. Teams of any affiliation can play and will be insured. AAU, USAV and JVA teams are all welcome!

Team Credential Pick-Up Times

A coach, club director or team representative will need to pick-up credentials for teams and wristbands for coaches. Below are the designated times for the credential pick-up. You will need to bring a filled out JVA Coaches Sign-In form to the Credential Pick-Up. The link to the form is also below.

Tournament Formatting

All matches will be best 2 out of 3 to 25 points. Third set to 15 if needed.
We will play ahead after the first match of all teams each day.
All teams will receive a minimum of 5 matches in the event, and a minimum of 2 matches on Sunday. Sunday may be either bracket play or an additional pool. All gold matches on Sunday will be bracket.
This formatting is the most efficient way to get everyone out of the convention center as early as possible on Sunday.

Spectator Wristband Information

We will be working with the city of Pittsburgh and the State of Pennsylvania in regards to the capacity limits in the convention center. We will e-mail updates and post on this website.

All spectators must be wearing a wristband to gain access to the area where the courts are at. We will have security monitoring the door checking for wristbands. Wristbands must be worn and not attached to a bag. Putting your wristband on a purse, bag, or anywhere other than your wrist will result in denied entry to the playing area. There are no replacements for lost or forgotten wristbands.  If you lose your wristband, leave it at home, leave it in your hotel room, etc., you will need to purchase another one.
All sales are final.  No refunds will be given for any reason.

Players and Coaches Entry
Teams will be given wristbands for their players and coaches at team credential pick-up. If a player would like to enter the venue prior to the date/time your team plays, it is encouraged that you contact your coach to make arrangements to pick-up your player wristband from them early.

Other Spectator Information

Spectator Seating
Chairs are provided around all 36 Courts
Spectator chairs are provided at all courts.  No outside, portable, or folding chairs are permitted at any site due to Fire Marshall restrictions.

Concessions and Outside Food
There will be concessions available throughout each day located on the concourse of Hall A. There will be no outside food allowed into the convention center. The Convention Center has a “No Cooler Policy”.  Participants and spectators will not be permitted to bring cooler, bags of food, etc. into any part of the Convention Center.  Please inform all players, parents and coaches of this policy.  This No Cooler Policy is not being controlled by GK Sports.  It is a Convention Center Policy.  Tournament Staff will not answer any questions concerning this policy.  All questions and comments about this policy should be directed to Convention Center staff.

Artificial Noise Makers
No artificial noise makers are permitted at the event.  This includes the use of speakers or “boom boxes” projecting music during team warm ups or competition.

Other Prohibited Items

  • Weapons of any type
  • Personal seats and chairs
  • Coolers
  • Personal transportation devices (hoverboard, skateboards, etc…)
  • Oversized bags or luggage
  • Outside food and drink
  • All tobacco products (including e-cigarettes and vaping products)
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Loud noise makers, including music sound systems not using headphones.
  • Balloons
  • Outside commercial photographers or professional videography
  • Other items as determined by the event staff

Court Layout
Layout will be posted prior to event

If you are driving into the city for the event and not staying at a hotel downtown, parking is available at the convention center parking ramp. The convention center controls these parking costs and is not able to be negotiated by the event. There are other downtown parking areas that can be explored, but the most convenient is the convention center parking ramp.

Schedule and Results Information

Tournament Seeding
Using the best available information teams will be seeded by committee members. Those committee members are comprised of other tournament directors.

Tournament Schedule

2022 Mizuno JVA Steel City Freeze Schedule (will be posted one week prior to the event)

Teams will participate in pool play Saturday and Bracket Play or Pool Play on Sunday. All teams will receive a minimum of 5 matches throughout the weekend and minimum of two matches on Sunday. We work to schedule the last matches no later than 4:00pm on Sunday (5:00 finish). Courts have run behind and we ask all teams to help stay efficient by knowing where their next matches are and being at their court on time.

GK Sports has contracted with AES Results Management System to provide up to the minute results. There will be no paper posting of pool results or schedules. We will not have on-site computers for results lookup. Please have the link saved on your mobile devices throughout the weekend.

Wave Schedule


Awards will be given to the Gold Division 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place teams.  The entire team must report to the photographer area to pick up the awards and have a team picture taken.

No awards are given to any other Silver, Bronze or other Division winners.

Tournament Athletic Trainers

Athletic Trainers are provided by University of Pittsburgh. They will be on-site beginning at 7:00am each day. You must provide your own tape. Supplies may be purchased through the trainers.
